The Psalmist

A few years ago (2014), one of my coworkers found an old hymnal in an antique store, and knowing my penchant for antique books AND hymns, bought it for me. The front cover was almost off, and the binding shaky, so I didn’t spend much time in it, other than the occasional browse. Once I retired and had more time in my hands, I decided to have it rebound so I could actually read the hymn texts without fear of ruining the book.

There are over 1100 hymn texts in this volume, and I am slowly making my way through them. I’m going randomly, opening to a page and reading, occasionally jumping to another page, and as I go, I am transcribing them and will post the texts here. Since the hymnal was originally published in the 1840s, and this version reprinted in the 1850s, I’m not worried about copyright infringement.

I hope you enjoy reading these hymns as much as I do. There are great concepts of worship and praise of the one, true, triune God – Father, Son, and Spirit – so come back, read, sing, and pray along with me.

If you’re interested, here is some photo background of this particular book. The newspaper articles were found inside the hymnal, between pages, giving us a bit of the history of this treasure.
